TITLE : EXPLORING OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES AND REPOSITORIES IN THE INDIAN CONTEXT

ABSTRACT: The rapid growth of digital learning environments has transformed education into a collaborative and open process of knowledge creation and dissemination. Open Educational Resources (OER) play a pivotal role in enhancing educational access, equity, and innovation by providing freely available teaching, learning, and research materials that can be used, adapted, and redistributed without restriction. This study explores the concept, definitions, advantages, and implementation of OER within the Indian educational framework. It examines key national initiatives and repositories such as SWAYAM, e-GyanKosh, National Digital Library (NDL), e-PG Pathshala, NPTEL, Shodhganga, and the National Repository of Open Educational Resources (NROER), which collectively promote democratized access to quality education. The paper highlights the pedagogical benefits of OER—cost reduction, flexibility, inclusivity, and continuous improvement—while identifying barriers such as limited awareness, infrastructural challenges, and quality assurance concerns. Through analysis of national and international perspectives, the research emphasizes OER’s potential to advance Sustainable Development Goal 4 by fostering inclusive, equitable, and lifelong learning opportunities. The study concludes that effective integration of OER and open repositories in India requires robust policy support, capacity building, and technological innovation to realize a sustainable and collaborative educational ecosystem.
