TITLE : REPRESENTATION OF DISEASE IN THE WASTELAND BY T. S. ELIOT

ABSTRACT: This research paper explores the representation of disease and suffering in T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land. It proposes to examine how the poem intertwines personal anguish, cultural degeneration, and spiritual desolation. Through a close reading of Eliot’s language, structure, and allusions, the paper argues that the poem reflects both the poet’s personal dilemma and the broader historical trauma of post-World War l. Myth and modernist fragmentation serve as diagnostic tools to convey the disintegration of meaning, while the appeal of Eastern spirituality at the end of the poem hints at the possibility of regeneration. By analyzing the sources of suffering in both individual and collective contexts, this study reveals The Waste Land as a work not only of despair but also of fragile spiritual aspiration.
